Dr. Khaled Abbas has over 31 years of advisory/expert/specialist/academic experience in transportation consultancy, research, training and academia. Such experience involved leading & managing transport groups/sections/departments and conducting consultancy projects/studies/research/training/teaching in fields of: strategic, urban and transport planning, transport & traffic modelling, public transport, master plans, traffic engineering, traffic safety, parking, road hierarchy, feasibility studies, traffic and environment impact assessment, logistics management, restructuring, privatization, PPP, performance evaluation and sustainable development. He is also experienced in the restructuring, reform & management of transport industry. He worked in several countries including Egypt, Australia, Saudi, Dubai, USA and UK. He just completed his term as Dean of Egypt National Institute of Transport as well as being a Professor of Transportation Planning & Traffic Engineering. Dr. Abbas is a Board member of Holding Company for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport Projects as well as a General Assembly member of the 4 road construction affiliate companies. He was also chairman of the board for River Transport authority as well as board member of several other transport organisations in Egypt including National Authority for Tunnels, National Institute of Transport and others.
Previously he worked as Chief Specialist of Transportation Studies and Planning at Roads and Transport Authority (Dubai). He also held the position of Manager of Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering at Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation in Australia and is currently acting as Technical Principal in the same company. He held several academic posts as a Professor at the National Institute of Transport (Egypt), King Faisal University (Saudi Arabia). He was also seconded to the Egyptian Military College, Egyptian Traffic Police, the United States Department of Transportation, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, Department, Civil Engineering Department – Tanta University – Egypt and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. His graduate studies include a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering and Operations in 1991 from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK and Masters courses from the same university. He also completed more than 15 professional training courses in Egypt, UK, USA, Australia and Dubai. He was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of Texas (USA) in 1995 and a Hubert Humphrey fellow at Cornell University (USA) in 2000/2001.
Dr Abbas led and was involved in more than 155 transport consultancy/research projects/studies with SMEC Australia, Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, Egypt National Institute of Transport, United Nations, World Bank, European Union as well as a number of Egyptian, Saudi and UK consultants. These projects were conducted in Australia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Turkey, Yemen, Algeria, Morocco, Dubai, Qatar, Kenya. He published more than 100 journal articles & conference papers, as well as attended more than 50 conferences/seminars. He taught more than 35 specialised academic undergraduate and graduate courses as well as designed and delivered more than 45 training courses to professionals and senior managers from Australia, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Ex-Soviet union Countries.
Dr. Abbas is currently a member of the editorial board of Advances in Transportation Studies: an international traffic safety journal published by the University of Rome, Journal of Transportation Technologies – Scientific Research Publishing Inc. – USA. Also acted as a reviewer for several international journals and conferences. He has also been a member of programme committee for traffic and transport safety stream. Dr Abbas was elected as Fellow Member of Institute of Engineers Australia and chair of Transport Branch – Canberra. He was also a member in more than 13 international professional organizations in UK, USA, Canada and Egypt as well as a member of more than 50 committees in Egypt, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, UK, Germany, USA, the European Commission. He also acted as a Technical Expert Witness in the Australian Parliament, Australian Capital Territory Court as well as the Egyptian Parliament. Dr Abbas was awarded more than 35 awards, plaques, recognition and thank you letters/certificates from organizations including RTA Dubai, IETT Istanbul, Ministry of Transport, Turkey & Technical University of Bursa, Turkey, SMEC Australia, KFU Saudi Arabia, US Embassy & Fulbright Commission in Egypt, University of Newcastle upon Tyne in UK. His biographical data was selected & included in 17th to 25th Editions of Who’s Who in the World, as well as in 32nd, 33rd & 34th Editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, 6th, 7th & 8th Editions of Who’s Who in Science & Engineering.
